Meet the First Indian-American Miss America

On Sunday night, Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was crowned the winner of the Miss America pageant, which was held in Atlantic City for the first time in six years. The 24-year-old's win is notable in that Davuluri is the first Indian-American winner of the pageant. For the talent portion, she performed a Bollywood-inspired dance number. The prospective doctor beat out 52 other contestants to take home a $50,000 scholarship
The pageant was not without its standard fare, including cheesy introductions ("Listening to your phone calls from the Nation's Capital. Just kidding! I'm Miss District of Columbia, Bindhu Pamarthi.") and a question round of fluctuating seriousness, but in addition to the milestone set by the pageant's winner, this year's competition also featured a few other notable standouts. Theresa Vail, Miss Kansas, earned pre-show chatter for a couple of reasons: she is a member of the U.S. Army and planned to prominently display her tattoos during the ceremony—a big no-no according to past contestants. It also featured Nicole Kelly, Miss Iowa, who was born without her left forearm.
The response to Davuluri has not been unanimously positive, unfortunately. BuzzFeed and CNN were both quick to catalog the flurry of tweets. commenting derisively on the winner's ethnicity.
